EVENT:Golden Sands 7, Dubai

We had over 70 attendees, some with spouses and children. The atmosphere was great and the seating was excellent at the rooftop, by the poolside, at Golden Sands 7. No doubt, It was a good start, when the Bar was opened and "ROYAL SPIRITS" started flowing!

The Head Table for the Election of Office Bearers and Committee Members was headed by the following Senior Old Royalists in the U.A.E.

Mr.Farook Cassim
Mr.Azmeer Mohammed
Mr.Namal Fernando (Snr.)

The Welcome Address was by Rameez Mahamoor, one of those who initiated this group in the U.A.E and he also gave a brief introduction of how this group was formed two years ago by five committed old Royalist’s and their contribution towards the success of this Group. Rameez also explained the objective of forming a proper Committee in the U.A.E. and the Achievements to-date, within this short period of time. He thanked all present members and the members who have already moved out from the U.A.E., for their continuous commitment and support.

Roshan Drahman explained the activities and events that took place during the last two years.

The events and activities were; The Largest Project undertaken by any Old Royalist’s Overseas Group to date-The Royal College Pool Re-tiling Project, a few family Get-togethers, Stall at Avurudu Pola (Sharjah Stadium), Two Royal- Thomian Cricket Matches, Royal-Thomian Rugby match, Inter School Cricket & Soccer Tournaments and 4 Blood Donation Campaigns.

Chanaka Warnapura tabled the accounts (since inception), and briefed on how the income was generated from various sources and how it was spent for the Pool Project and other activities.

The summarized accounts position as at date was circulated to the members. No Queries or clarifications were raised.

Rameez thanked all for the support received, to complete the Royal College Pool Project. He said the task was made easier due to the role played by all the members including several R.C.U. – U.A.E. Committee Members who are not with us today, especially A.J.Namal Fernando (Gillette), Asoka Bandaranayake, S. Ramachandran, M.U. Namal Fernando, Nazir Mayadeen and the rest. The floor was open to questions and clarifications from the audience.

Jayatilaka Bandara raised the possibility of obtaining a letter from R.C.U. –U.A.E. in case of Admission of children to College. Rameez explained that once we are registered with the RCU and ORGACO, then we could put this proposal to a vote with the General Membership, before a decision is taken.

Mr.Denzil Gunawardena raised a point on the Legal status of this committee in the U.A.E. Chanaka Waranapura explained that, R.C.U.- U.A.E. will register with the Sri Lankan Consulate in Dubai, and obtain approval which will give us some hold in this part of the World.

Brian Perera pointed out that, we should have more funding from the members. Rameez stated that members’ participation in all events is important and more corporation is required. He said this year would see more emphasis on members’ get-togethers and Team building.

Rameez spoke of the quick setting up of our own Website and the good work done by Shiraz Sideek and Reza Mustafa.

The proceeding for selection of office bearers was handed over to the Head table.

The Election was called to order by Denzil Gunawardena and acceptance of nominations was begun.

Post of President
The name of Rameez Mahamoor for Post of President was nominated by Farook Cassim and seconded by Azmeer Mohamed. No further nominations were received. Rameez Mahamoor was unanimously Elected President, for 2001/2002.
Post of Vice President
The name of Brian Perera for post of Vice President was nominated by Roshan Kariyawasam and seconded by Suresh Perera. No other nominations were received. Brian Perera was unanimously elected Vice President for 2001/2002.
Post of Secretary
The name of Roshan Drahaman for post of Secretary was nominated by Reza Mustafa and seconded by Rameez Mahamoor. No other nominations were received. Roshan Drahaman was unanimously elected Secretary for 2001/2002.
Post of Asst. Secretary
The name of Roshan Kariyawasam for post of Assistant Secretary was nominated by Brian Perera and seconded by Suresh Perera. No other nominations were received. Roshan Kariyawasam was unanimously elected Assistant Secretary for 2001/2002.
Post of Treasurer
The name of Chanaka Warnapura for post of Treasurer was nominated by Rameez Mahamoor and seconded by Roshan Drahaman. No other nominations were received. Chanaka Warnapura was unanimously elected Treasurer for 2001/2002
Post of Asst. Treasurer
The name of Deepal Rajaguru for post of Assistant Treasurer was nominated by Reza Mustafa and seconded by Heshan De Silva. No other nominations were received. Deepal Rajaguru was unanimously elected Assistant Treasurer for 2001/2002.

Azmeer Mohamed and Nurendra Perera opted out of being considered for nomination, due to Personal reasons. The new committee was introduced to the Members and their main focus for this year was stated as more Member activities and Team building. Shiraz Sideek said that he will look into the possibility of hosting an activity at Abu Dhabi.

Deepal Rajaguru informed all members of the upcoming Blood Donation planned for the 26th of October and requested that everyone to be present.

A farewell Gift for three of our very active committee members who are migrating from the U.A.E, followed. On behalf of R.C.U.– U.A.E. Rameez thanked M.U.Namal Fernando, Arosha Jayawardena & Lasantha Dantanarayana for their generous support and contribution towards the success this Group. They were given tokens of Appreciation and these were handed over by Farook Cassim, Denzil Gunawardena and Rameez Mahamoor.

On behalf of the new committee, Rameez thanked everyone who attended this Inaugural AG.M. and all those who helped make this event a success.

The Meeting concluded at 2240 hours.

Thereafter our Guitarist (Viraj) and Drummer (Nurendra) got ample exercise with a solid non-stop baila session for the young and old. - The proceedings ended at 2.30 a.m.
