| Due to the unavailability of traditional Dubai exiles RFC grounds where the previous matches were all played the Royal-Thomian organizing committee decided to move the games to Sharjah Wanderers RFC grounds. The new re-location gave most of the crowd who lived in Deira Dubai & Sharjah suburbs a great convenience in proximity. The organizing committee hired a better live band & sounds this year’s event. Roshan Kariyawasam was the project chairman of Royal & Deva Perera from STC.
STC sprang surprises in the Royal camp by winning both veterans matches easily and were eying for a clean sweep by winning the trophy match by hitting an imposing score of 157/9 Wkts in the allocated 15 overs. It was the highest score in the series. Royal took up the challenge by shattering Thora’s dreams by putting 100 runs for the loss of 1 wkt in the 8 Th over! Thora’s heads were down & had no response to Royal swashbuckling knocks of Nurendra Perera (30), Jeewana De Siva (33) & Nigel Fernando’s majestic 72 N.O which ended the game 11.3 Overs!! Nigel hit the winning runs by hoisting Thora’s Deva Perera for a six over mid wicket to seal a fantastic Victory for Royal!! Nigel in the meanwhile broke the highest score set by Thora’s Manoj Algama (66 N.O) last year & went on to score 72 N.O thus awarded the Man of the match cup this year. Royal team was captained by Manjula Premaratna who was determined to win back the trophy after two years. Rugby team was captained by Shanaz Hajireen in the absence of Rajiv De Chikera who was nominated earlier.
If Royal team made the college proud by the famous victory over Thora’s one must not forget the heroics done by Royal ladies team either! Royal Ladies batting second & 3 runs needed to win in the lat ball, Royal batswoman fighting the nerves pulled the ball for a boundary sending Royal camp in utter joy!
