EVENT : Royal College Swimming Pool Renovation Project
Project Summary and Costs

The Royal College Swimming Pool, which is over 30 years old now is badly in need of major repairs and renovations. The Board of Management has, in the recent past, carried out some essential improvements such as replacing the Filtration System, Chlorination System, and refurbishment of the Canteen with it’s own funding. The Board of Management is unable to fund the repairs presently needed and therefore is looking out for financial assistance.

The details of the repairs needed are as follows:
Most of the Wall Tiles on the vertical surfaces has aged so badly that the glazing has been badly damaged. This results in algal and fungal growth on the rough surfaces which is very unsightly and difficult to clean.
The tiling on the floor is also aged buut not to the same extent. As the pool has to be closed for a long period to carry out the first repair it may be prudent to replace the tiling on the floor as well at the same time.
The rounded tiles on the edge of the skkimmer has not been considered for replacement as it has to be specially manufactured or imported. It will be very good if this too could be replaced at the same time which would result in a total renovation of the pool.
The budgetary cost estimates are as follows:
Removing of existing tiling on walls and floor taking necessary precautions to protect the special edge tiles on the skimmer drain.
Removing the backing and bedding as necessary, and carting away the debris (51 Sqrs.) Rs.80,000.00
Waterproofing of all surfaces (42 Sqrs.) Rs.400,000.00
Tiling of walls with homogenous, vitrified, 8” x 4” tiles complete with grouting (25 Sqrs.) Rs.375,000.00
Tiling on pool floors (18 Sqrs.) Rs.270,000.00
Tiling on curb walls on outer edge of pool (6.7 Sqrs.) Rs.102,000.00
Tiling on Foot Wash (0.4 Sqrs.) Rs.6,000.00
Tiling on steps (0.7 Sqrs.) Rs.12,000.00
Tiling on Starting Blocks (0.2 Sqrs.) Rs.3,000.00
Contingencies @ 10% Rs.125,000.00
Total Estimated Cost is Rs.1,373,000.00
The above is only a budgetary estimate. A detailed BOQ will be drawn up and quotations called for when the work is to be carried out, which will be available to RCUAE as the sponsor of the project.
RCUAE sincerely hopes that the effort to provide the necessary financial assistance to carry out these much needed repairs to the Royal College Swimming Pool, will help in maintaining the only asset the RCU has at present.
Further details on the project will be available with:
Mr. Wijitha Perera, Hony. Secretary,

Project Financing Status (as at end May 2000)

Total financial commitment towards the fund as at 25 May 2000 was AED 9893/= (which is less the subscription donations)
Unfortunately, a deficit of AED 350/= was incurred at the 2nd meeting on 03 Feb 2000 as 7 confirmed member participation failed to show up.
Donations can be made direct to the project. Please contact azmeer@emirates.net.ae for further details.

We look forward to every Royalist to help towards this project.

Report on the presentation of first installment

We wish to acknowledge with our sincere thanks, the first part of your contribution amounting to SL. Rs. 300,000.00 which was handed over to the Principal, Royal College at a simple ceremony at the pool side, during the second week of July 2000.

We were trying to get the photographs taken by the official photographer, but he has delayed handing over same.
The Master in Charge of swimming has now advised us that the pool can be closed for renovation work in October & November according to their programmes. We are now fine tuning the plans to work according to this schedule. Shall keep you posted of the progress.
All members of the Board of Management wishes to convey our thanks and warm regards to all your members.
